Arun Jaitley needs a ‘tax holiday’

New Delhi, 30 September: Massive ministerial responsibilities may prove ‘taxing’ for the recuperating Union Finance and Defense Minister Arun Jaitley.

Experts, not willing to be identified, say given the kind of illness he is through, he needs a long ‘tax holiday’, to use the phrase from financial lexicon itself.  The responsibility of two so important portfolios is a double whammy of sorts. They have advised him to call it quits for at least 3 months for his health markers to stabilize fully.

Arun Jaitley, recuperating in AIIMS after his bariatric surgery in Max hospital on September 2, is presently under intense monitoring by a team of doctors at the Cardiothoracic and Neurosciences Centre of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He is being kept in complete isolation to avert recurrence of infection that happened after his surgery. Not to talk of cancelling trip to USA stipulated for October 8 to attend a World Bank meeting, as advised by experts, he can not take the stress of work for quite some months from now even if sedating at home.
According to sources at AIIMS, Jaitley may be discharged any time soon, may be on Wednesday but doctors there would advise him complete rest for long time to come. He was shifted to AIIMS from Max Hospital on Sunday after event of respiratory infection. Jaitley is currently stable and is being monitored by a team of doctors at AIIMS, including those specializing in pulmonary medicine and cardiology.

Dr. Pradeep Chowbey, chief of bariatric surgery in Max hospital, who had operated upon Mr. Jately, had said just after bariatric surgery that diabetes may not disappear in Arun Jately but the improvement would be dramatic for sure. Before surgery his diabetes had escalated and there was swelling in his legs. He had said that damages already done in his kidney could not be reversed but the surgery certainly would stem further damage. Experts say Jatley opted for the surgery very late. Early birds like Nitin Gadkari and Venkaiya Naidu, Arun Jaitley’s collegues, underwent this surgery just in time and is reaping the benefits. Arun Jaitley lastly had to come under knife due to his uncontrollable sugar.
