Dr.Trehan calls India Heart Seismic Zone
On World Heart Day Medanta gives a stern wakeup call
Dr.Trehan calls India Heart Seismic Zone
Gurgaon, September 29: This World Heart Day, Dr. Naresh Trehan, the Cardiac Surgeon Extraordinaire, chose a very harsh imagery to send ‘tremors’ to them who do not care for heart. Some areas of India may not be vulnerable to earthquake but so far as heart disease is concerned, the whole of India is turning into a dangerous heart seismic zone.
Addressing Gurgaon’s distinguished guests and residents in Medanta Medicity, Dr. Trehan said, ‘India is quickly becoming a heart-disease epicenter due to a mix of genetic predispositions, diet and lifestyle factors. An estimated 6 crore Indians are suffering from heart diseases. We consume more food than necessary which is high in calories and engage in ever lesser physical activity. We are addicted to sugar and are afflicted with stress. It is time for us to take a step towards a generation free of heart diseases. This World Heart Day beat together against the spread of this preventable epidemic.’
Like an oracle, he said, ‘If the trend continues, in the next few years India will certainly be the World capital of cardiovascular diseases.’
He said the situation of heart diseases in India is reaching grave proportion and stressed on the need of prevention and leading a healthy life. Medanta also organized a free health camp on the sidelines of the event which was attended by more than 500 residents.
Talking on preventing heart diseases, Dr.R.R.Kasliwal, Chairman, Clinical & Preventive Cardiology, at Medanta-The Medicity, said ‘Our young South Asian population will bear 60% of the world’s heart disease burden. We would perhaps do well in celebrating World heart decade instead of just a World Heart Day. Avoid the ‘Six Ss’ that is, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, salt, sugar, stress and saturated fats to stay heart-healthy. A cardiovascular disease-free India is possible only if we can put our hearts to preventing it.’
